"Vancouver Island's Year Round Recreation Destination"
|
Many
interesting and entertaining tours are available in the Courtenay, Comox,
and Cumberland area. You may want to visit a fossil site, tour a fish
hatchery or explore Hornby and Denman Islands by bike. Will you can
do any of those things and more on your visit to the Comox Valley.
Recent discoveries of rich fossil beds in the Trent and Puntledge Rivers have led to some new possibilities when it comes to visiting the Comox Valley. Tour the Courtenay Museum and you can see a life size recreation of a 10 metre Elasmosaur discovered in 1988, other fossil displays, and native heritage and pioneer displays. For an even better understanding of fossils you can take a scheduled tour of a fossil site and these tours are available year-round. With mining, fishing, and logging having played or still playing such an important part in the area's economy a tours involving any of these industries are well worthwhile. You can visit the Puntledge River Hatchery at any time during the year, especially during the fall when thousands of salmon return to spawn, to learn about how the fish population is being replenished. To learn about the area's coal mining heritage go to the Cumberland Museum and tour the replica mine. The museum is open year-round like so many of the area's attractions. If you are more interested in recreation then take a 15 minute ferry ride to Denman Island, rent or bring a bike and visit Fillongley Provincial Park and/or tour the many artisans studios. After you've toured Denman Island you can take another ferry to Hornby Island. On Hornby you'll find Helliwell Provincial Park with it's 5 km(3 mi) circle walk including the spectacular Helliwell Bluffs. Of course there are many tours offered for the golfing, skiing, fishing or diving enthusiast and we hope to be able to bring you more information on such tours as our site continues to grow. |
