Golden’s development began with the coming of the Canadian Pacific Railroad in the mid-1880s.  It linked the railroad with the steamship traffic of the Columbia River.  Golden still flourishes but today because it is in the centre of 5 national parks (Yoho, Jasper, Banff, Rocky Mountain, and Glacier), is internationally acclaimed for white water rafting and hang-gliding, and is just 13 km (8 mi.) from the Whitetooth Ski area.  Outdoor enthusiasts also enjoy heli-skiing, ice climbing, mountaineering, horseback riding, bicycling, and kayaking.

Golfers will enjoy the 18-hole course that whose 14th hole is home to a pair of eagles.  Naturalists consider Golden an excellent vantage point for birdwatching and viewing wildlife.

The local events include the Vintage Car Show ‘n’ Shine in June, the Mud Bog in June, the Golden Rodeo in August and the Hang-gliding and Para-gliding Championships in August.
