Via Rail operates a Dayliner service between Victoria and Courtenay BC . The trip is an excellent way to see the scenery of Vancouver Island without the hassles of driving the "under construction" Island Highway. Enjoy a leisurely trip up the east coast of the Island with a quick turn-a-round and head back for a great way to spend a day. Make sure you pack a lunch as there is no food service onboard.
